Permanent Collection: Works of Art on Paper Medieval illuminated manuscripts, woodcuts by Albrecht Durer, etchings by Piranesi, drawings by Delacroix, and lithographs by Robert Rauschenberg are all to be found in the Carlos Museum's Works on Paper Collection. The 3,000 works of European and American art span six centuries and consist mainly of drawings, prints, and photographs, but also include some sculpture, paintings, and works in other media. The Art History Department of Emory University began the collection in 1967, and faculty members continue to play an active role in the acquisitions for the Museum. The Carlos Museum has also benefited from numerous donations from private collectors, many of them Emory alumni, as well as from Emory faculty and diverse friends based in Atlanta and elsewhere. These donations-encompassing 19th-century and modern photography, Renaissance and 17th -century reproductive prints, American Regionalist lithography, contemporary art and other areas-have enriched the Museum's collection immeasurably. It is an encyclopedic collection from all fields of European and American art, designed to provide both instruction and delight.
