Permanent Collection: Works of Art on Paper: Francois-Leon Benouville, 1821-1859 French, Two Men Ascending a Stair. Brush and black ink, black and white chalk. Art History Department Fund. 1981.7 Benouville was a French academic painter who exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1838 on. Like many of his colleagues in this period, Benouville was a great admirer of Raphael and sought to imitate the charm and perfection of coloring he perceived in the Renaissance master's work. This particular study might derive from a work of Raphael, but the subject has not been identified. |
