Odyssey Online: Near East
Writing

People living in cultures before writing was used are called "prehistoric." When writing was developed in a culture, people were able to record information about their civilization. The documents that they left behind tell us some of their history.

Ancient Near Eastern cultures wrote on clay tablets in a "wedge-shaped" alphabet called cuneiform.
