Crossing the Stream
Barbara Latham, American, 1896-1989
Crossing the Stream
6 x 8 5/8 in. (15.2 x 21.9 cm)
Born into an artistic New England family, Latham eventually settled in Taos, New Mexico, although she and her husband traveled extensively in Europe, Mexico and the Caribbean. This print was published by the American Artists Group, which took part in the Depression movement to "democratize" art. It presents its subject matter in bold black and white forms, while delicately cut areas of fine lines describe the textures of trees and water. The landscape, horses and riders are all readily recognizable, but they have been pared down in their details so that empty space becomes as much a part of the composition as the figures and forest. This bold, simplified style served Latham well not only as a fine artist, but also as an illustrator of children's books.
