Description

The carefully coiffed hair and beard here suggest the sitter's stylish refinement, sophistication, and worldly success. The ascetic features and receding hairline imply a man in later middle life. The drill-work that articulates the hair and beard and the high polish are characteristic of late Antonine and Severan works.

A portrait of the same sitter in the Louvre is also carved by the same sculptor. Single portraits of private Roman men and women are common, but pairs are extremely rare. The man who commissioned them must have been important in his town; it is not unlikely that we would recognize his name if epigraphic evidence were available to identify him. The pair may have been set up in a private house or in a public context; they would have been inserted into busts or full (draped) bodies separately made.
