Attentive readers of the last newsletter may be puzzled by the current exhibition in the John Howett Gallery. The exhibition originally planned was to include highlights from the entire Works on Paper Collection—from the Renaissance to the present day—but it proved to be too crowded—a pleasant surprise. It was then decided to split the exhibition of highlights into two parts. The first of these, Modern and Contemporary Masters: Highlights from the Works on Paper Collection, opened on January 24. On display are drawings, prints, and photographs from the 19th to the 21st century, including works by Eugène Delacroix, Eugène Atget, Andre Masson, and Robert Smithson. This exhibition will run through May 17.
On August 15, the second exhibition, Old Masters: Highlights from the Works on Paper Collection, will open. Prints and drawings dating from the 16th to the 18th century, by such great artists as Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt, and Giovanni Battista Piranesi, will be on display.
Of special interest is an etching by the Italian artist Federico Barocci (ca. 1535-1612), the Madonna and Child in the Clouds, from around 1581. This print, a recent acquisition, will be on view at the Carlos for the first time. Barocci made very few prints, and impressions today are rare, but the etchings he did make were much admired by his contemporaries and succeeding artists, notably Rembrandt. The
Old Masters highlights will run through December 6. Don’t miss this opportunity to see these exciting works from the collection that is one of the best kept secrets of the Carlos Museum.
