Brass weights were manufactured many centuries ago during
the gold trade which started in Africa in the 9th century A.D. Each family
had their own set of brass pieces which they used to weigh gold dust.
Instead of melting brass into standard bars, Ghanaian metalsmiths created
a variety of human and animal figures, geometric patterns, and floral
motifs.
These figurines could communicate certain social commentaries in addition
to their use as weights. They often related to a proverb and so they
would communicate the idea connected with the proverb. Unfortunately,
we don't recognize the proverb that might be related with this weight!
