Oshugbo Society

The Oshugbo society is an important spiritual, social, and political organization that guides the community and judges those who do not conform to the laws of the land.

In pre-colonial times, Oshugbo society members had the power to send the Oro masquerade into town to carry out punishments.

This sculpture represents an Oshugbo society member. He is shown wearing a sort of uniform.

He is wearing his badges of office - a bag (worn on the left side of the body) and a sash (draped over his right shoulder).

He also performs a hand gesture - placing one clenched fist above the other, while raising his thumbs. This gesture is like a salute and indicates that he's a member of the Oshugbo society.
