In pre-colonial
times, Oshugbo society members had the power to send the Oro
masquerade into
town to carry out punishments.
This sculpture represents an Oshugbo society member. He is shown
wearing a sort of uniform.
He is wearing his badges of office - a bag (worn on the
left side of the body) and a sash (draped over his right shoulder).
He also performs a hand gesture - placing one clenched
fist above the other, while raising his thumbs. This gesture is like
a salute and indicates that he's a member of the Oshugbo society.
