Royal Furniture

On very important occasions, the king sits on his throne, but for everyday activities a stool is used.

The Fon's stools have elaborate openwork carving with human and animal imagery. This stool features a leopard.

Can you find it?

In many Cameroon Grasslands societies, the king is called "leopard." The cunning, speed, and strength of a leopard makes this animal an appropriate symbol for a king.

Surrounding the leopard on this stool are representations of the royal ancestors or courtly officials who protect and support the king.
