1950s - A Scientific Approach...
Over 100 tombs were discovered at Jericho during excavations of the ancient city conducted between 1952 and 1958 by Kathleen Kenyon. Kenyon helped pioneer stratigraphy as a more scientific approach to archaeological excavation.

Using the method of stratigraphy in her excavations, she:

  • carefully traced and excavated the site's successive layers of dirt and occupation debris;
  • recorded, drew, and photographed the objects found;
  • and provided invaluable evidence about thousands of years of human settlement.
Her excavations were sponsored by the British School of Archaeology with funding donated by many institutions including Emory University. Many of the ojects from Jericho in the Carlos Museum collection were discovered by Kenyon!
