Red-Figure Calyx-Krater Fragment with Athletes and Palmettes.  Attributed to the Pezzino Group (Greek, active ca. 525-500 BCE). Greek, Attic.  Archaic, ca. 510-500 BCE.  Terracotta.  Gift of Dr. Dietrich von Bothmer.  2006.051.049A.

In December 2023, the Michael C. Carlos Museum transferred pottery sherds constituting fragments of two Greek Attic red-figure vessels (2006.051.011A/JJ and 2006.051.049A/W) to the District Attorney of New York’s office after being presented with specific evidence about their past. The objects were gifted to the museum in 2006 by Dietrich von Bothmer, a scholar of ancient Greek vases and former curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Emory University fully cooperated with the Office of the District Attorney of New York (DANY) on this matter. Based on the work of that office and Emory's own provenance research, the University decided to voluntarily transfer these objects to the DANY for return to Italy. Any questions should be directed to the Office of the District Attorney of New York.
