ARTHIST 289: Islamic Arts in the Mediterranean World
Designed to complement the spring exhibit Wondrous Worlds: Art & Islam Through Time & Place at the Carlos Museum, this course focuses on the formative period of medieval Islamic art from the 6th through the 13th centuries. It begins with an exploration of the world in which Islam came into being, by investigating the rich traditions of Byzantium, Sassanian Persia, and the Silk Routes. For the Islamic period, works from diverse capitals such as Baghdad, Nishapur, Córdoba, and Cairo will be examined.
