Yorubaland

April 1 5, ages 7 to 12 (FULL)

Experience the life force found in Yoruba art from the Oyo Empire of West Africa to the African diaspora with teaching artist Lakeem Winborne. Over the week, children will explore the Yoruba pantheon of Orisha, Ifá proverbs and stories, and the power of the Egungun, the mask that gives shape to spirits and ancestors. Children will get a chance to meet Curator of African Art Amanda Hellman who will share with them Yoruba art not currently on view, allowing children a closer look at the materials used by West African artists such as cowrie shells, metal medallions, wood carvings, and indigo-dyed textiles before they make their own art inspired by the Yoruba.
