Cosmic Form of Eighteen Armed Vishnu. India. 11th century. Sandstone. The Ester R. Portnow Collection of Asian Art, a gift of the Nathan Rubin-Ida Ladd Family Foundation.

Vishnu, the preserver, comes to earth in times of distress in order to maintain the cosmic order.

During this AntiquiTEA, presented on September 2, 2020, Dr. Harshita Kamath, Koppaka Assistant Professor in Telugu Culture, Literature, and History,  discussed the conception of Vishnu in the Hindu pantheon and his role illustrated by the works in the special exhibition Transcendent Deities: The Everyday Occurrence of the Divine and the Carlos Museum's permanent collection.
