With our present abundance of time at home, many of us are considering our accumulated material possessions. Whether tucked away in the attic or on display, silver is a material often found in the realm of treasured heirlooms and collectibles.

Emory University student Emily Farek investigated the ancient technique of gold granulation. She examined Carlos Museum objects and considered the chemistry that enables this process.

The Carlos Museum houses an excellent collection of carved gems from throughout the ancient world. In antiquity, the carved surface would have been pressed into either wax or clay to transfer the image.
